Vote Yes on Opportunity for Olympia Initiative 1 to establish a college grant fund for all future high school graduates in Olympia.
Endorsed by: Thurston County Democrats, Olympia Education Association, Reeves Middle School PTA, Thurston County Young Democrats, State Representative Sam Hunt, State Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler, Washington Federation of State Employees Council 28, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 21, Olympia school board member Justin Montermini, South Puget Sound Community College Student Council, and many more.
The Opportunity for Olympia college grant program would give every young person in Olympia access to affordable higher education by funding at least 1 year of public community, technical or 4-year college in Washington for Olympia’s high school graduates and GED earners.
It’s paid for by establishing a 1.5% tax based on the portion of household income in excess of $200,000 – raising an estimated $2 million for the grant fund from the wealthiest 3% of Olympia households. And it includes safeguards: only 5% of the fund can be used for administrative costs, and the city auditor is required to conduct annual audits to make sure the fund is used properly.
Olympia small businesses supporting this initiative include Kickstand Ice Cream, Oly Frame Makers, Deschutes River Cyclery, New Traditions, Rush In Dumplings, Jamie Lee and Company, Danger Room Comics, Funk Fuzz Records, Obsidian, Rosies Joint, and more.
